Nose Surgery Recovery

Nose surgery is one of the most popular forms of cosmetic surgery as more and more people feel they are entitled to have a better looking nose.  Although seen by many as nothing else than vanity, from a psychological perspective, having an unsightly nose – or at least one that is perceived that way – can cause low self esteem, a lack of self confidence and even depression.  One thing that puts people off nose jobs, however, is the recovery period associated with it.  Many people have seen programmes such as Extreme Makeover and have seen the bruises and swelling, which makes them worry.

Nose Surgery Procedure and After Effects

Nose surgery takes a very short amount of time, generally only one or two hours.  After the surgery, you are likely to experience:
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Pain
Although this sounds horrid, these are normal side effects and can easily be managed with medication and only last for around a week to ten days.

What to Do After Nose Surgery

In order to aid the process of nose surgery recovery, it is important to follow the instructions given to you by your surgeon.  Straight after surgery, you will be fitted with some packing on the inside of your nose, to help with the new shape staying in place.  You will also be fitted with a splint on the bridge of your nose so the outside and upper structure can stay in place.

Nose Surgery Post Operative Care

One way to recognise a good quality plastic surgeon is by the levels of pre and post operative care you receive.  Post operative care straight after nose surgery should include a comfortable room in a clean clinic, where you are given all the time you need to recover from your surgery.  Generally, rhinoplasty is done on an outpatient basis, meaning you will go home the same day, but you should not feel rushed into doing so.

During your nose surgery recovery period, you are likely to have to visit your plastic surgeon at least twice, once to have your bandages removed – generally around a week to ten days after surgery – and once again after a number of weeks to ensure the healing process is well underway and your nose is starting to look like it will once you are fully healed.

This is one of the main reasons why opting for plastic surgery is never recommended, as it will be near to impossible for you to receive adequate post operative care during your nose surgery recovery period.  Although nose surgery is generally much cheaper abroad, if something does go wrong you will have no place to turn to and may have to pay for a plastic surgeon in the United Kingdom to fix any problems, thereby significantly driving up the cost.

It should be clear that nose surgery recovery is somewhat painful, but nothing that can’t be managed with some paracetamol.  Sometimes, a surgeon may prescribe additional medication if your bruising and swelling is particularly severe, but this is rarely the case with nose surgery recovery.
